The Book Club is a successful project launched in the year 2002 within the cultural activities of the New Brunswick Latino Association Inc.
The Book Club began with the participation of few members and has been transformed not only in a tradition for its local followers, but also in a recognized event that has inspired many circles of literature around the world, by being unique in its kind and in its continuity.
The main objective of the Book Club is not the deep analysis of a literary work but the pleasure of its reading upon sharing it with others, to understand the literary work in the context of its creation; and above all to understand the human behaviour in the contexts of its cultural circumstances.
These objectives are met thanks to the participation of the people, members of our community, that contribute their cultural experiences of different kinds, their knowledge in literacy, anthropology, and arts, that when mixed with a little chocolates and fruits, at times fermented, they finish by giving the evening a tasty result.
The club counts on a coordinator, which prepares the readings, selecting primarily short stories by Spanish and Latin-American authors, and reads them in weekly meetings, during the cold months of the year.
She is also in charge of leading the group: she assures everyone is heard, she asks questions that invigorate the debate, intervenes in excessively long interventions, etc.
The readings are carried out in the houses of the participants, alternating the hosts.
It is important to know that to participate in the readings:
• One does not need to be an expert; the club is for all readers.
• There is no fee to be paid to be a member of the club.
• It is not obligatory to participate in the debates.
• One may attend meetings without having read the story.
The Book Club is affiliated to the Fredericton Chapter of the Ibero-American Academy of Poetry since 2009, and has the support of writers belonging to the Registro Creativo of the Canadian Association of Hispanists, that in many cases have allowed us to read their stories.
